By embracing a thorough approach to preventive care, which encompasses more than just yearly exams and vaccinations, pets and their families can experience longer and healthier lives. This is a collective duty of our entire veterinary care team who is involved in providing comprehensive and patient-focused care, and it is a crucial aspect of every interaction we have with you, the pet owner.
It’s important for your pet to visit a veterinarian for routine physical exams and vaccines to maintain their well-being and happiness. The number of visits required varies based on several factors, such as breed, age, lifestyle, and any existing health issues. For instance, puppies should be seen once a month, while a healthy adult dog may only need an annual check-up.
During a Routine Check-up
Since pets cannot express when they are unwell (some may even try to conceal their pain), regular check-ups are a crucial aspect of ensuring their health. During these check-ups, our veterinarians conduct a thorough nose-to-tail examination, including assessments of your pet’s weight, temperature, pulse, lungs, ears, mouth, and teeth. Our vet will also ask you questions about your pet’s diet, water intake, activity level, weight changes, and behavior changes. Additionally, our vet will conduct diagnostic tests and administer vaccinations. Depending on your pet’s individual needs, additional steps may be taken during these visits, such as discussions about spaying or neutering for younger pets. All of this information assists our veterinarian in determining your pet’s overall health and helps in early detection and prevention of potential issues. Ultimately, preventive care contributes to a longer and happier life for your pet.
Besides routine exams and vaccines, preventive care often encompasses:

Dr. Purificacion was born the Philippines, where her dream of becoming a veterinarian was kindled by raising a Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso duo at home. Her love for animals led her to completion of her veterinary medicine degree at the De La Salle Araneta University Philippines, and clinical clerkship at the Louisiana State University.
Dr. Ertola grew up in San Francisco, where she spent her childhood engaging in activities centered around animals. She volunteered to help socialize shelter cats, worked at a summer camp with the SCPA Hearing Dogs program, and took horseback riding lessons with her cowboy grandpa. Now residing in Bonita with her husband (whom she met at UC San Diego), her two young daughters, and their tri-pawed fur baby Lab mix, Riley, Dr. Ertola cherishes her role as a veterinarian.
